This is a simple electronic compass and speedometer ideal for use in your car or boat. It uses the iPhone GPS to determine heading and speed and displays in either metric or US units.

(Note: As with ANY gps based compass, you must be moving for direction of travel to be computed as it is based upon change in position coordinates.

ALSO: This obviously requires a GPS so this wont work on first generation iPhone or the iPod Touch.)

-Large easy to read numeric display of speed.

-Dual mode scale:
--Scale rotates with heading at the 12 oclock position.
--Or, scale is "North up" with a heading arrow that rotates around the scale.

-US or Metric units dynamically selectable: Miles per hour, Kilometers per hour, Knots.

-Readout of current lat/lon in the lower left of the screen.

-Pulsing "star" confirms GPS update activity.

-HUD (Heads Up Display) mode inverts scale so it reflects properly off your windshield when placed on dash at night. Its cool to be able to view your speed and direction without taking your eyes off the road.

Pros and cons of gCompass app for iPhone and iPad

gCompass app good for

Most of the other compass displays Ive looked at had scales that were not as precisely drawn as this one with perhaps just the usual 4-8 cardinal points. This one looks like the instrument in an aircraft and seems to be quite accurate when moving down the highway. The speed tracks closely with the speedometers in all the vehicles I drive in. Of course you have to be moving for a gps to "know" which direction it is going. I have several other GPS based apps and I have to say that the GPS theyve built into the iPhone is pretty good. Now if theyd only build it into the iPod Touch theyd really have something. This app gets five stars for the scale precision and ease of use. The HUD display is a neat idea too. Getting the text to "mirror" is a neat trick.
I use it all the time. Have only one issue with it not engaging the gps.
This is slick! It takes a few seconds after starting to let the GPS kick in but once it does and kicks into the location API the direction and speed really works well. The night mode reflecting off the windshield is cool!
I dont know what gives with some folks. This app does just what it says it will do. It tells you which way you are going and how fast. This will be really cool for bike trips as soon as I can figure a safe way to mount my iPhone on a bike.
This is a great app! I like the compass scale as it mimics what I see in an airplane heading indicator. This would be ideal for an ultralight or hang glider. Id love to see and airports database integrated with something like this.
Works well. Youd get another star if GUI could be turned off.

Some bad moments

I use a compass for work and thought I could use this app. It doesnt say in the description that you must be moving to use it (to show North). Other than that it might be usefull (I guess). I do think the HUD is a great idea though, but I have to make my screen brighter to use it.
Does not work at walking speed. Lags on up date. Other than that works as advertised.
